Broadly speaking digital signage can be classified into indoor, outdoor and mobile digital signage. The key aspect to focus on would be to ensure a high-brightness display for outdoor location and to ensure adequate protection for the display and its accessories. Perhaps a more pertinent way of distinguishing digital signage types could be to look at usability and connectivity aspects of the system. Accordingly, we can classify the digital signage systems as stand-alone, independent, network and interactive and multi-display digital signage systems.
Stand-alone Digital Signage System - Is typically a single PC solution which is pre-loaded with all the components of the digital signage software including the template manager, server, scheduler and the display player. The stand alone digital signage system mostly uses the available individual monitor for content display. Alternatively, if the PC supports dual monitor then one monitor is used for the editing and the other for content display.
Independent Digital Signage System - The content for independent digital signage systems are updated manually through external storage media devices. These systems are highly cost-effective but are cumbersome to manage and scale up. Majority of the larger digital-out-of-home (DOOH) network operators in India currently use these type of systems.
Network Digital Signage System - Also called as dynamic digital signage system or advanced digital signage system, these systems are digital signage with full-functionality. The content is managed and scheduled from a centralized location over the TCP/IP network to monitors located anywhere in the world.
Interactive Digital Signage System - Digital signage systems that come integrated with touch, gesture and/or other innovative features that enable the target audience to interact with the monitor are referred to as Interactive digital signage systems.
Multi-display Signage System - Also popularly called video-walls consists of multiple LCD displays or full-color LED units tiled together contiguously in order to form one large screen. These systems are controlled through a videowall controller systems and create impressive visual appeal and large than life impact.
